Litchi fruit borer
Conopomorpha sinensis
Description
Systematic position. Conopomorpha sinensis, widely known as the litchi fruit borer, belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Gracillariidae. This insect is a significant pest primarily affecting orchards in tropical and subtropical regions, specialized in targeting specific fruit-bearing trees.
Host range and economic impact. The primary host of this pest is the litchi fruit (Litchi chinensis). The larvae cause extensive damage by boring into the fruit pulp and seeds, which leads to fruit drop and renders the remaining crop unsaleable. In heavily infested orchards, farmers may face severe financial losses, sometimes exceeding 80% of the total fruit yield.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The female moth deposits eggs on the fruit surface. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel directly into the fruit to feed on the interior tissues. The duration of the life cycle is highly dependent on ambient temperatures and the developmental stage of the host fruit.
Nature of damage. Damage is typically characterized by the presence of frass (larval excrement) near the entry points on the fruit skin. Internal consumption by the larvae results in the degradation of fruit quality and promotes secondary decay caused by fungal or bacterial pathogens. Infested fruit usually loses its commercial value and cannot be stored for long periods.
- Monitor moth populations using pheromone-baited traps.
- Sanitation practices, including the collection and destruction of fallen fruit.
- Judicious use of systemic or contact insecticides during peak oviposition periods.
- Implementation of biological control methods using beneficial wasps.
- Strict adherence to orchard management and regular pruning to improve airflow.
