Cereal dung fly

The cereal dung fly (Cordilura pubera) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Scathophagidae. It is a recognized agricultural pest that specifically targets grass species, including major cereal crops. As an insect adapted to temperate environments, it plays a significant role in the degradation of young grain stands during the early stages of development.

The host range of Cordilura pubera covers a wide variety of cereals, such as winter and spring wheat, rye, barley, and oats. In addition to cultivated fields, the fly utilizes various wild grasses as alternative hosts, which allows the population to persist in the field environment throughout the season and between crop rotations.

The biology of the fly is tightly linked to the phenology of cereal crops. Adults emerge in spring and lay eggs on the leaves or stems of young seedlings. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the central part of the stem, moving toward the growing point. This destructive feeding habit disrupts the plant's vascular tissue, preventing proper stem elongation and grain head formation.

The primary damage symptom is the "dead heart" effect, where the central leaf of the plant turns yellow and dies. This damage inhibits the development of the primary tiller and often leads to secondary tillering, which results in uneven crop maturity and significant yield losses. In cases of severe infestation, the impact on grain density is substantial.

Management strategies for controlling Cordilura pubera involve an integrated approach:
