The wheat miner fly (Nanna flavipes) is a member of the Scathophagidae family, known for its status as a significant pest of cereal crops. This insect is distributed across many temperate regions, impacting the health and productivity of major small-grain cultivations.
The primary hosts for this pest include spring wheat, barley, and rye. While it prefers these specific crops, it can also manifest in oat fields and wild grasses, making it a persistent challenge for farmers who need to manage their fields throughout the early stages of plant development.
The fly's life cycle is closely synchronized with the growth stages of cereals. It overwinters as pupae within puparia, typically found in the soil or protected by plant debris.
