Smooth darkling beetle

The smooth darkling beetle (Corticeus glaber) belongs to the family Tenebrionidae, part of the order Coleoptera. This species is commonly classified as a stored product pest, primarily infiltrating granaries, silos, and milling facilities where it poses a significant threat to agricultural commodities.

These beetles primarily infest stored grains, flour, and cereal products. In addition to agricultural grain, they are known to inhabit wood contaminated with fungi, feeding on the fungal mycelium and other small insects dwelling within the decaying material, which makes them highly adaptable pests.

The life cycle and developmental rate of Corticeus glaber are highly dependent on ambient temperature and moisture levels. Adults lay eggs in cracks, crevices, and deep within grain piles. The larvae undergo several molts while consuming organic matter before pupating within the substrate.
