Corynothrips

Description

Systematic position: Corynothrips is a genus of insects belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. These tiny, slender insects are known for their ability to colonize host plants rapidly and are significant pests in agricultural systems, particularly within tropical and subtropical climates.

Host plants: This genus is known to attack a variety of plants, with a strong preference for Solanaceae and Fabaceae families. Among the most notable hosts is cassava (manioc). Their ability to thrive on diverse weed species often allows them to persist in fields even between growing seasons.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of egg, larva, prepupa, pupa, and adult stages. Eggs are deposited inside plant tissues, protecting them from environmental factors. The transition from egg to adult is highly dependent on temperature, where higher ambient temperatures significantly shorten the reproductive cycle, leading to overlapping generations.

Damage and harmfulness: Both adults and larvae feed by piercing the plant cells and sucking out the sap. This feeding behavior results in silvery or chlorotic spots on the leaf surface, leading to tissue necrosis. Heavy infestations cause leaf curling, stunted growth, and a substantial reduction in the photosynthetic capacity, which directly results in yield losses.

Control measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Corynothrips:

  • Monitoring populations with blue or yellow sticky traps.
  • Field sanitation, including the removal of infested plant residues and weed management.
  • Utilizing biological control agents such as predatory mites (e.g., Amblyseius spp.).
  • Application of systemic insecticides or contact-action pesticides when population thresholds are exceeded.
