Bird louse fly

Crataerina

Description

The Bird louse fly (genus Crataerina) belongs to the family Hippoboscidae, order Diptera. These highly specialized insects are obligate hematophagous ectoparasites of birds. While they do not infest plants, they are significant pests within the poultry industry, causing substantial health problems for avian flocks and economic losses for farm managers and veterinarians.

The biology of Crataerina is unique due to their reproductive strategy known as adenotrophic viviparity. The female produces a single larva at a time, which pupates almost immediately upon being deposited. Their development is closely synchronized with the host's nesting season, allowing the parasites to thrive in the protected environment of bird nests and plumage.

The harmfulness of these flies is primarily linked to their blood-feeding habits. Frequent bites cause intense irritation and pruritus, leading to restless behavior in birds. Chronic infestation can result in significant blood loss, secondary dermatitis, and anemia, which collectively contribute to reduced weight gain in broilers and decreased egg production in laying hens.

Symptoms of infestation include skin lesions, patchy feather loss, and constant self-preening. If a severe infestation occurs, the overall immunity of the birds drops, making them more susceptible to avian pathogens. The presence of the flies can be confirmed by visual inspection of the bird's underside or wing areas, where they are often found moving quickly against the grain of the feathers.

Control measures primarily focus on integrated pest management (IPM) within poultry facilities. This involves strict sanitation protocols, such as removing old nesting material where pupae accumulate and applying approved insecticides to both the environment and the birds themselves when necessary. Maintaining high hygiene standards is critical to preventing the build-up of parasite populations.

  • Regular application of approved veterinary-grade insecticides.
  • Deep cleaning and disinfection of nests and housing areas.
  • Quarantine procedures for incoming or new birds.
  • Monitoring of bird behavior for early signs of infestation.
