Description

The camel fly (Hippobosca camelina) is an obligate ectoparasite belonging to the family Hippoboscidae, order Diptera. This insect is highly specialized and is primarily found residing on the skin of camels, where it feeds on host blood to survive and reproduce.

While this insect does not affect crops directly, it is a significant pest in agricultural sectors focused on camel husbandry. By irritating the animals and feeding on their blood, it reduces the animal's ability to thrive and impacts the overall economic output of the herd in arid regions where these camels are raised.

The life cycle of Hippobosca camelina is distinct due to a reproductive strategy known as adenotrophic viviparity. Instead of laying eggs, the female produces a single larva at a time, feeding it internally until it is ready to pupate. Once deposited, the larva pupates rapidly in the soil or bedding, completing its development based on environmental temperature conditions.
