Description

Systematic position: The willow flea beetle (Crepidodera aurata) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. This small beetle is easily identified by its brilliant metallic green, golden, or copper-colored elytra, which provide a distinct appearance compared to other soil-dwelling flea beetles.

Host plants: The primary hosts for this species are plants within the Salicaceae family. These beetles are predominantly found feeding on various willow species (Salix) and occasionally on poplars (Populus). They pose a particular risk in nurseries and plantation areas where these woody species are cultivated.

Life cycle and biology: The species undergoes a complete metamorphosis. Adults overwinter in protected areas such as soil surface, leaf litter, or crevices in the bark. With the onset of spring, adults emerge to feed on developing foliage, followed by egg-laying. The larvae typically develop by feeding on plant tissues, completing their life cycle in the vicinity of their host plants.

Damage and economic impact: Adult beetles feed on leaves, creating numerous small, circular holes known as "shotholes." Under high population densities, this feeding behavior leads to severe skeletonization of the leaves, significantly reducing the photosynthetic efficiency of the plant. In young trees, this stress can inhibit growth, reduce vigor, and increase susceptibility to secondary pathogens.
