Golden flea beetle

The golden flea beetle, scientifically known as Crepidodera aurea, belongs to the family Chrysomelidae (leaf beetles) within the order Coleoptera. This insect is a notable defoliator that specifically targets plants belonging to the Salicaceae family, showing a clear preference for willow and poplar species.

These beetles are particularly damaging during their adult stage, feeding on the foliage of their host plants. Their biological cycle begins in the early spring when overwintering adults emerge from soil debris or leaf litter to feed on developing buds and young leaves before mating and laying eggs.

The larvae of Crepidodera aurea also contribute to the plant damage. Once they hatch, they begin to feed on the underside of leaves, causing skeletonization or irregular holes. Such damage reduces the plant's leaf area, hindering photosynthesis and potentially causing the decline of younger specimens if left untreated.

In forestry and ornamental nurseries, the golden flea beetle can become a significant pest if the population density is high. Its activity is often correlated with warmer weather, which accelerates their reproductive cycle and leads to more frequent infestations throughout the growing season.

Effective management strategies emphasize cultural and chemical control. Maintaining hygiene in the nursery, such as removing fallen leaves where the beetles overwinter, is a foundational step. If chemical intervention is necessary, timing is crucial to ensure that applications target the larvae during their most active feeding phases.
