The asparagus beetle (Crioceris subpolita) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Chrysomelidae family. It is a highly specialized agricultural pest that focuses its feeding and reproductive activities almost exclusively on the asparagus plant, making it a significant challenge for growers.

This beetle primarily affects Asparagus officinalis. Both adult insects and their larvae cause substantial damage by consuming the plant’s epidermis, succulent stems, and foliage. Without adequate management, infestation can lead to stunted growth, distorted spears, and a major reduction in overall crop yield.

The life cycle of Crioceris subpolita is closely synchronized with the asparagus growing season. Adults overwinter in protected areas such as soil cracks or plant debris. As soon as temperatures rise, they emerge to feed and lay eggs on the plant’s stalks. The larvae hatch and undergo several growth stages, consuming large amounts of plant tissue before pupating.

The visual impact of the pest is quite characteristic: larvae often cause significant skeletonization of the foliage, while adults create irregular holes and feeding scars on the edible spears. This contamination by both the beetles and their frass significantly decreases the marketability of the produce, often rendering it unsuitable for sale.
