Systematic position: The genus Croesus belongs to the order Hymenoptera within the family Tenthredinidae. These insects are commonly known as sawflies, and their larvae are notorious for causing significant defoliation in berry-producing shrubs.
Host plants: The primary hosts for this pest include gooseberries and various species of currants (Ribes). These bushes provide both the necessary nutrients for larval development and the shelter required for the species to complete its complex lifecycle.
Biology and life cycle: Adult sawflies emerge in the spring, coinciding with the flowering of host plants. Females deposit eggs into the leaf tissue along the veins. Once hatched, the larvae, which are gregarious in nature, feed rapidly. Depending on the climate, the species may produce two or more generations per growing season, increasing the pressure on the plants.
Damage and harmfulness: The larvae are highly voracious. A heavy infestation can lead to complete defoliation of the bushes within a matter of days. This loss of foliage limits photosynthesis, negatively impacting fruit size, sugar content, and the plant's ability to survive the following winter season.
