Ten-spotted leaf beetle

The ten-spotted leaf beetle (Cryptocephalus decemmaculatus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. This beetle is identified by the distinctive ten dark spots on its elytra, which serve as its primary taxonomic characteristic. Like many members of its genus, it is a phytophagous insect that spends much of its life cycle in close association with its host plants.

This pest primarily attacks trees within the Salicaceae and Betulaceae families, with a strong preference for willow (Salix) and birch (Betula). They are frequently found in moist habitats, such as riparian zones and wetlands, where the density of host trees is high and the environment supports their development throughout the warm season.

The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. A notable biological feature is the larval case-making behavior; larvae construct protective shells from their own frass and organic debris. This unique strategy allows them to move safely across the forest floor or foliage while remaining protected from predation.

The damage is caused primarily by adults feeding on leaves, resulting in irregular holes or ragged edges. While individual damage might be minor, high populations in nurseries or plantations can significantly impact the health and aesthetic value of the trees. Severe infestations stress the plants, making them more susceptible to secondary infections or environmental stressors.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies are recommended to control this beetle. Chemical control involves the application of appropriate insecticides during the period of adult activity in late spring and early summer. Additionally, cultural practices, such as clearing fallen leaf litter and debris, are highly effective in disrupting the life cycle of the larvae and reducing future populations.
