Four-spotted case-bearer

The four-spotted case-bearer (Latin: Cryptocephalus quadripustulatus) is a beetle belonging to the family Chrysomelidae within the order Coleoptera. It is recognized as a pest in both forestry and, occasionally, in agricultural landscapes where broad-leaved trees and shrubs are grown.

This insect primarily targets deciduous plants such as birch, hazel, willow, and alder. In specific environments, it can affect fruit trees or berry bushes near forested areas, leading to localized damage that requires careful monitoring by agronomists to prevent significant foliage loss.

The life cycle of this beetle is characterized by the unique behavior of its larvae. After hatching, the larvae construct portable cases (or shells) made of their own excrement and debris. These cases serve as a protective cover throughout the larval development stage, allowing them to feed on foliage safely while remaining hidden from predators.

The primary form of damage is defoliation. Adults feed on leaves, creating distinct holes or irregular notches, which can reduce the photosynthetic capacity of the plant. In cases of high population density, young shoots and seedlings can suffer severe physiological stress, which may impact the overall vigor and survival of the crop.

Control measures involve a combination of monitoring and chemical or biological intervention. Maintaining clean fields by removing fallen leaves and debris reduces overwintering sites for the beetles. If the threshold of damage is exceeded, the application of targeted insecticides during the larval emergence period remains the most effective way to manage population numbers.
