Cryptophagus acutangulus

Cryptophagus acutangulus

Description

Cryptophagus acutangulus, commonly known as a type of sharp-angled fungus beetle, belongs to the family Cryptophagidae (order Coleoptera). This insect is a significant pest of stored products, primarily thriving in environments where agricultural commodities are stored under suboptimal conditions, specifically those prone to high humidity.

This beetle species feeds primarily on mold and fungi growing on damp grain, cereal products, flour, and animal feed. Unlike primary grain pests, Cryptophagus acutangulus is considered a secondary pest because it usually colonizes already deteriorating or moist commodities. Its presence is often an indicator that the storage facility has moisture management issues.

The biology and lifecycle of this beetle are closely tied to the presence of mycelium. Adults and larvae actively feed on fungal spores. In warm and humid environments, the population can grow rapidly, leading to significant infestations within granaries, warehouses, and domestic pantries where food items might be stored for long periods.

The damage caused by these beetles is twofold. Firstly, they cause physical degradation of stored goods by feeding on particles and carrying fungal spores deeper into the grain mass. Secondly, the infestation results in contamination of the products with excrement and larvae remains, which severely compromises the hygiene and commercial value of the stored grains.

Management and protection strategies should focus on eliminating the conditions that favor the pest's development:

  • Maintaining moisture levels in stored grain below 14% to inhibit mold growth.
  • Implementing rigorous hygiene and cleaning protocols in silos and storage areas.
  • Ensuring adequate ventilation and cooling systems to prevent moisture condensation.
  • Using professional fumigation treatments when infestation levels exceed economic thresholds.
  • Inspecting incoming shipments to prevent the introduction of beetles into clean storage facilities.
