Cryptophagus schmidti is a small beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Cryptophagidae. Commonly known as a type of mold beetle, it thrives in environments where stored agricultural products are susceptible to fungal growth due to moisture imbalances.

This pest is frequently found in grain silos, warehouses, and storage facilities, where it infests stored cereals, pulses, flour, and processed grain products. While they are not considered primary pests that penetrate healthy, dry grains, they become a serious issue once the product is dampened or infested by fungi.

The biology of Cryptophagus schmidti is highly dependent on humidity. The lifecycle comprises four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adults and larvae feed primarily on fungal spores and mycelium. Because of this dietary preference, their presence is often an indicator of spoilage and improper storage conditions.
