Biting midges (genus Culicoides) are minute flies belonging to the family Ceratopogonidae. While they do not damage crops, they are significant pests in the agricultural sector, primarily affecting livestock health and productivity in rural and pasture-based operations.
The lifecycle of Culicoides consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult females require blood meals to produce eggs, which they typically lay in moist habitats rich in organic matter, such as wet soil, manure, rotting vegetation, or damp silage edges. Larval development is strictly tied to these moist environments.
The economic impact of midges is primarily driven by their role as persistent blood-suckers. Attacks on cattle, sheep, and horses cause severe irritation, allergic dermatitis, and constant stress, which directly results in reduced milk yields, stunted growth, and diminished animal welfare across the farm.
Crucially, biting midges act as biological vectors for various viral diseases, most notably Bluetongue virus and Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease. These outbreaks can trigger international trade bans and necessitate large-scale culling, causing devastating losses to the agricultural industry.
