Biting midge Culicoides insignis

Culicoides insignis

Description

Systematic position: Culicoides insignis is a species within the order Diptera and the family Ceratopogonidae. Known as biting midges or "no-see-ums," these tiny flies are globally recognized in veterinary entomology as significant biological vectors of various viral pathogens affecting livestock and wildlife.

These insects do not cause direct damage to agricultural crops. However, their impact on the agricultural economy is profound due to their role as vectors for diseases such as Bluetongue virus and Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease. These diseases severely limit livestock health, reduce milk and meat yields, and trigger international trade restrictions for affected areas.

Biology and life cycle: Culicoides insignis undergo complete metamorphosis consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The breeding sites are typically micro-habitats characterized by high organic content and moisture, such as muddy soil near ponds, animal waste lagoons, and damp decomposing vegetation, where larvae thrive as scavengers.

Damage characteristics: The primary harm is inflicted through the blood-feeding behavior of adult females. Beyond the direct stress and dermatitis caused by their bites, the injection of saliva during feeding facilitates the transmission of pathogens into the host's bloodstream. This results in morbidity, reduced animal welfare, and significant mortality rates in susceptible herds.

Protection measures: Effective control requires a strategy focused on both habitat modification and direct protection of livestock:

  • Elimination of stagnant water and muddy areas around animal housing facilities.
  • Implementation of residual insecticide treatments in cattle barns and stables.
  • Application of livestock-safe repellents and pour-on insecticides to reduce biting pressure.
  • Use of physical barriers such as fine-mesh netting to prevent insect entry into enclosures.
