Cumopsis

Cumopsis is a genus of microscopic mites belonging to the family Diptilomiopidae, order Trombidiformes. These organisms are obligate phytophagous pests that feed on the tissues of various higher plants, causing significant stress to both agricultural crops and ornamental species.

The pest typically localizes on the vegetative parts of the host plant, often sheltering in leaf axils, buds, or cracks in the bark. Depending on the species, their host range can be quite broad, though they demonstrate a preference for plant species that are already experiencing some level of physiological stress, making them vulnerable to infestation.

The biology of Cumopsis is highly dependent on ambient temperature and humidity levels. Their life cycle includes the egg, nymph, and adult stages. Under favorable conditions, these mites reproduce rapidly, leading to the formation of dense colonies that can quickly spread across the surface of the plant, feeding on cell sap and depleting the host's resources.

The damage caused by Cumopsis is characterized by leaf deformation, stunting, chlorosis, and the development of necrotic areas. Due to their microscopic size, they are notoriously difficult to detect during the early stages of an infestation, which often results in severe damage to plant tissue and reduced yields before the farmer can initiate control measures.

Control measures require a multi-faceted approach, including the application of selective acaricides and rigorous sanitation practices.
