Systematic position: The German tiger beetle (Cylindera germanica) belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Carabidae, and subfamily Cicindelinae. These beetles are primarily predators known for their agility and metallic appearance. While they are beneficial insects, their presence in large numbers can occasionally become a concern for agricultural management.

Crops affected: These beetles do not consume plant tissues as their main diet. However, they can be found in various environments, including cereals, forage crops, and vegetable fields. The impact on crops is usually accidental, occurring when their burrowing activity disturbs the soil surface near the developing root systems of young seedlings.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is critical for farmers, as they reside in vertical soil tunnels. During this period, they hunt small arthropods. The total development cycle often spans more than one season, allowing them to remain a constant presence in the local ecosystem.

Damage characteristics and economic impact: The economic damage is generally considered minor or negligible compared to major plant-feeding pests.
