The larger black flour beetle (Latin: Cynaeus angustus) is a significant pest of stored products belonging to the Tenebrionidae family. Originally native to certain regions, it has become a cosmopolitan pest, frequently found in grain elevators, flour mills, and various facilities involved in food processing and storage.

This beetle primarily infests cereals, flour, processed grain products, feeds, and dried plant materials. Its ability to thrive in diverse environments allows it to exploit almost any stored food resource, making it a persistent challenge for facility managers and agricultural producers alike.

The life cycle of the beetle is significantly influenced by temperature and the nutritional quality of the infested substrate. Adult females lay eggs in food sources, and the developing larvae consume the material while maturing. The metamorphosis process is temperature-dependent, allowing for multiple generations annually under favorable climate conditions inside storage facilities.

The damage caused by Cynaeus angustus is multifaceted. Beyond the direct consumption of grain kernels and milled products, the infestation results in significant contamination. The accumulation of frass and larval cast skins lowers the aesthetic and sanitary quality of the product, often leading to commercial rejection and financial losses.
