The Cynaeus angustus, known as the larger black flour beetle, is a significant pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Tenebrionidae. It has gained attention as a serious threat to stored grain commodities and processed food products, often becoming established in mills, grain elevators, and warehouses across various regions.

This beetle species targets a broad range of stored products, including wheat, corn, barley, oats, and various flour-based goods. It is particularly known for attacking products that are not kept under optimal sanitary conditions, effectively infiltrating bulk storage systems and causing considerable damage to stored batches of cereals.

The biological cycle of this pest involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The beetles are highly adaptive to varying environmental conditions, allowing them to complete their life cycle rapidly in warm and humid environments. Larvae are typically found deep within the grain mass or inside the structures of storage facilities.

The damage caused by Cynaeus angustus is primarily through consumption of grain embryos and endosperm, leading to weight loss and reduced nutritional quality. Furthermore, their presence promotes the accumulation of moisture within the grain, which creates ideal conditions for microbial decay and mould growth, rendering the commodity unfit for market or consumption.
