Club-horned treehopper

Cyphonia clavigera belongs to the family Membracidae, known as treehoppers. This pest is characterized by its remarkable morphology, featuring a distinctively shaped pronotum that mimics thorns or club-like growths, providing excellent camouflage against the stems and twigs of host plants.

This insect primarily targets a variety of woody plants, shrubs, and specific fruit-bearing crops. In agricultural environments, it is most frequently observed on tender young shoots, where the concentration of sap is highest, providing the necessary nutrition for both nymphs and adults throughout their life cycle.

The life cycle of Cyphonia clavigera consists of an egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Females insert their eggs into the plant tissue of young stems using their specialized ovipositors. Nymphs remain relatively stationary while feeding, often congregating in clusters, which facilitates the rapid spread of damage across the host plant.

The damage caused by these insects is twofold: physical injury due to sap extraction leads to chlorosis, stunted growth, and twig dieback. Furthermore, the oviposition sites (slits in the bark) serve as entry points for secondary pathogens, including various fungal and bacterial infections that further compromise plant health.

Effective management requires an integrated approach:

• Pruning and removing infested branches to reduce population density.
• Application of systemic insecticides during the early nymphal stages.
• Enhancing plant vigor through proper fertilization and irrigation.
• Encouraging the presence of natural predators, such as ladybugs and parasitoid wasps.

Monitoring is crucial, as early detection prevents widespread colonization. Regular inspections of the undersides of leaves and young shoots during the growing season are recommended to identify the presence of nymphs before significant structural damage occurs to the host vegetation.
