Cyzicus

Cyzicus is a genus of clam shrimp belonging to the class Branchiopoda. Within the agricultural context, these small crustaceans are recognized as significant pests in flooded cropping systems, particularly in paddy fields, where they interfere with the initial establishment and growth of young rice seedlings.

Taxonomically, they are classified under the order Diplostraca and the family Cyzicidae. These organisms possess a bivalved carapace that protects their body during dry periods. They are well-adapted to ephemeral habitats, making rice fields an ideal environment for their proliferation once irrigation begins.

The biology of Cyzicus is characterized by a high degree of drought resistance. Their eggs, or cysts, can remain dormant in the soil for extended periods, surviving harsh environmental conditions. Upon flooding, these cysts hatch rapidly, leading to explosive population growth within a short timeframe.

The damage caused by these pests is both mechanical and physiological. By burrowing and swimming actively near the sediment, they stir up the substrate, increasing water turbidity. This prevents light penetration, which is vital for the young rice shoots, and physically disrupts the delicate root systems of the plants, ultimately causing stunted growth or total crop loss.
