Cyzicus tetracerus

Cyzicus tetracerus is a species of clam shrimp belonging to the order Conchostraca and the family Cyzicidae. While often categorized as aquatic fauna, in the context of rice cultivation, it acts as a significant pest by colonizing flooded fields and interfering with crop establishment.

The primary crops affected by this organism are rice (Oryza sativa). The pest thrives in the submerged environments required for rice production, making it a recurring challenge in paddy management across various agricultural regions.

The biology of Cyzicus tetracerus is characterized by high adaptability. They produce resting eggs that can survive prolonged desiccation in dry soil. Once the fields are flooded for rice planting, these eggs hatch rapidly, leading to a population surge of larvae and adults that coincide with the most vulnerable stage of rice seedling development.

The damage caused by these crustaceans is largely mechanical. They feed on young rice seedlings, often gnawing at the roots and the base of the stems. This leads to reduced stand density, stunted growth, and in severe cases, the complete loss of seedlings in patches, necessitating expensive replanting operations.

Effective control strategies require a combination of field management and chemical intervention:

• Ensuring complete drying of the soil before flooding to destroy dormant egg banks.
• Water level management to prevent ideal breeding conditions for the shrimp.
