Systematic position: Dactylopius confusus is a scale insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Dactylopiidae. While often confused with related species used in cochineal dye production, this specific insect is recognized as a significant pest that thrives on various species of cacti.

Host plants: The primary hosts for this species are cacti belonging to the genus Opuntia. Because of their specialized feeding habits, they are most frequently encountered in arid regions or greenhouse collections where prickly pears and related succulent species are cultivated.

Biology and life cycle: The species exhibits sexual dimorphism. Adult females are wingless, sedentary, and covered in a dense, white, cotton-like wax secretion that provides protection against predators and desiccation. Males are winged and short-lived, serving only the purpose of fertilization. The cycle is continuous under favorable warm conditions, allowing for multiple generations per year.

Nature of damage and harm: These insects feed by piercing the plant epidermis and sucking sap from the vascular tissue. The damage manifests as chlorotic spots, stunted growth, and tissue necrosis. The sticky honeydew secreted by the insects promotes the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight and interferes with the plant’s ability to photosynthesize effectively.

Control measures: Controlling Dactylopius confusus requires a multifaceted approach due to the protective wax layer. Recommended strategies include:

• Application of systemic insecticides (such as Imidacloprid) applied as a soil drench.
• Manual removal using a soft brush dipped in 70% isopropyl alcohol.
