Cactus mealybug

Taxonomic position: Dactylopius opuntiae belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Dactylopiidae. These insects are sedentary sap-sucking pests that have co-evolved with plants of the genus Opuntia. They are highly specialized insects known for producing carminic acid, which serves as a chemical defense mechanism against predators in their natural habitat.

Crops damaged: The primary host plants are various species of the Opuntia cactus. While D. opuntiae is sometimes introduced as a biological control agent to manage invasive cactus populations in nature, it is a devastating pest in greenhouse production, ornamental nurseries, and fields where opuntias are grown for fruit or fodder production.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of the cactus mealybug consists of several stages: egg, crawler (nymph), and adult. Adult females are wingless and stationary, covered in a characteristic white, waxy secretion. Crawlers are highly mobile and disperse across the plant surface, often aided by wind or animal contact, before settling in crevices to begin feeding on the sap.

Nature of damage and pest status: Damage is caused by the extraction of large amounts of plant sap, which leads to stunted growth, yellowing (chlorosis), and tissue necrosis. The feeding sites provide entry points for pathogens, leading to secondary infections. Severe infestations can result in the complete collapse of the cactus segments and the eventual death of the entire plant if left untreated.

Control measures: Integrated pest management is essential for long-term success. Key strategies include:

• Physical removal of infested segments or manual brushing with soapy water.
• Application of systemic insecticides containing active ingredients like imidacloprid or acetamiprid.
• Quarantine protocols for new plant materials to prevent infestation spread.
• Monitoring the health of cacti to catch outbreaks at the early stages of crawler emergence.
