Description

The genus Dasychira belongs to the family Erebidae. These insects are well-known defoliators, and their larvae are characterized by prominent tufts of hair, which gives them their common name. While the adults are nocturnal moths, the caterpillars represent the primary economic threat to both forestry and ornamental tree cultivation.

The larvae feed on a wide variety of deciduous trees, including oak, beech, birch, and various fruit trees. In years of high population density, these caterpillars can cause extensive defoliation, stripping trees of their foliage. This loss of photosynthetic capacity weakens the host plants, making them more susceptible to drought, winter damage, and secondary pests.

The lifecycle typically consists of one or two generations per year, depending on the geographical location. They generally overwinter as early-instar larvae, hidden within crevices in the tree bark or leaf litter. When spring arrives and buds begin to flush, the larvae resume feeding, rapidly increasing in size as they progress through multiple larval stages.

The damage is highly noticeable, as the caterpillars consume leaf tissue from the margins inward, often leaving only the midribs and main veins intact. Due to their ability to disperse via silken threads carried by the wind during their early stages, infestations can spread rapidly across a landscape, making early detection a critical component of successful management.

Control strategies should be integrated to be effective. Monitoring programs using pheromone traps can help track adult moth activity. When larval populations exceed thresholds, the application of selective biological insecticides, such as Bacillus thuringiensis, is recommended to minimize environmental impact while targeting the pest. Regular orchard maintenance and protecting natural predators are also essential.
