Description

The fir tussock moth (Dasychira abietis) is a member of the Erebidae family. It is recognized as a specific defoliator that predominantly targets various fir (Abies) species, posing a significant risk to conifer forests and specialized plant nurseries where host trees are grown.

The insect's life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis pattern: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The caterpillars are the primary stage responsible for feeding damage. They possess distinct hair tufts, which is a common diagnostic feature used by entomologists to identify this specific species in the field.
