Pine tussock moth

Dasychira plagiata

Description

Systematic position. The pine tussock moth (Dasychira plagiata) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Erebidae (subfamily Lymantriinae). This moth species is recognized as a forest defoliator capable of causing substantial ecological and economic impact on conifer forest stands.

Host plants and significance. The primary host for this pest is the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). Feeding damage is strictly confined to needles, and while it prefers pine, it can occasionally be found on other coniferous species depending on the geographical region and the density of the moth population.

Biology and life cycle. Dasychira plagiata undergoes complete metamorphosis. Adults are typically nocturnal moths. The life cycle usually involves one or two generations per year, depending on the climate. Larvae overwinter in a quiescent state, often in protected niches of the bark, resuming their feeding activities as soon as ambient temperatures rise in the spring.

Nature of damage. The primary damage is caused by the larval stages. Early instars perform skeletonizing, while later instars consume the entire length of the needles. A heavy infestation leads to severe defoliation, which causes significant physiological stress, reduced radial growth, and tree mortality if the infestation persists over several consecutive years.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this species. Key strategies include:

  • Regular forest health monitoring using pheromone traps.
  • Application of microbial insecticides, such as those containing Bacillus thuringiensis, which are effective against young larvae.
  • Encouraging natural predators and parasitoids to keep populations below the economic injury level.

Chemical control is considered a last resort in strictly managed forest areas. If required, registered insecticides should be applied during the early larval stage to minimize environmental impact and maximize treatment efficacy.
