Variable tussock moth

Systematic position: The Variable tussock moth (Dasychira vagans) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Erebidae (subfamily Lymantriinae). These moths are known for their hairy larvae, which are a characteristic feature of the tussock moth group, playing a significant role in forest entomology as potential defoliators.

Host plants: The larvae are polyphagous, primarily feeding on various deciduous trees and shrubs. Common hosts include species of Betula (birch), Quercus (oak), Salix (willow), and Alnus (alder). In specific environmental conditions, they may pose a threat to fruit orchards located near forest edges or mixed woodland areas.

Biology and life cycle: The species typically undergoes a complete metamorphosis. It overwinters as larvae, protected in silk cocoons or leaf litter. Activity resumes in the spring as temperatures rise, leading to rapid larval growth. Adults emerge later in the season to mate and oviposit, typically depositing eggs on the bark or foliage, marking the completion of the annual generation.
