Systematic position: The great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) is a member of the order Piciformes and the family Picidae. While often considered beneficial due to its insectivorous diet, it frequently becomes a nuisance in intensive orchards and forest nurseries, where its feeding habits cause significant damage to cultivated trees.
Crops and damage pattern: The species primarily targets fruit trees, such as apple, pear, and cherry trees. The woodpecker drills deep holes into the bark to reach wood-boring larvae or creates "anvils" to crack seeds and nuts. These activities puncture the bark, expose the inner wood, and significantly compromise the structural integrity of the affected branches.
Biology and lifecycle: This is a sedentary species with a year-round presence in its territory. During the nesting season in spring, they excavate cavities in tree trunks. Their activity increases in late summer and autumn as they forage for winter food supplies, often damaging ripening fruits and weakening trees through aggressive drilling behaviors.
Economic impact: The damage caused by the great spotted woodpecker often exceeds the value of the pests they consume. Open wounds on the trunk serve as entry points for fungal pathogens and wood-decaying organisms. This leads to the development of necrotic areas and can result in the premature death of young, vulnerable fruit trees.
Control measures: Effective management requires a combination of deterrents and physical barriers:
- Installation of bio-acoustic devices that broadcast predator alarm calls.
- Deployment of visual deterrents, such as reflective tapes, spinning discs, and predator decoys.
- Wrapping trunks of young trees with fine mesh or protective guards to prevent drilling.
- Implementing regular orchard hygiene by healing tree wounds and removing deadwood that attracts the birds.
