This species is a specialized inhabitant of coniferous trees, primarily fir and spruce. It frequently exhibits symbiotic or phoretic relationships with bark beetles, utilizing them for dispersal to new hosts, which makes it a constant companion in bark beetle infestation outbreaks.
The biology of the mite is inextricably linked to the condition of the wood. Development takes place within the bark, where the mites feed on fungi growing in insect galleries; however, during massive outbreaks, they can exert a suppressing effect on the tissues of weakened trees.
