Description
Systematic position: Dendrothrips ornatus, commonly known as the beech thrips, belongs to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. It is a tiny, sap-sucking insect that poses a significant threat to deciduous trees in both forestry and landscape gardening sectors.
Host plants: The primary host for this pest is the beech tree (Fagus). However, it is also frequently recorded on other species, including linden (Tilia) and lilac (Syringa). It thrives in environments where host density is high, making it a common concern in urban parks and nursery environments.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle progresses through egg, larval, prepupal, pupal, and adult stages. Overwintering occurs in the adult stage within bark crevices or leaf litter. As spring temperatures rise, the insects emerge to deposit eggs into leaf tissues. Multiple generations can be produced within a single growing season, leading to rapid population growth during warm, dry weather.
Damage and pest status: The pest feeds by piercing and sucking plant cell contents, resulting in characteristic silvering or chlorotic spotting on leaves. As the infestation progresses, leaves become curled, brittle, and may fall prematurely. The presence of black fecal spots on the underside of leaves further degrades the aesthetic value of the trees and reduces their photosynthetic capacity.
