Dentalium is a genus of marine scaphopod mollusks, easily identified by their tubular, tusk-shaped shells open at both ends. While they are not traditional agricultural pests affecting terrestrial crops, they are recognized in specialized aquaculture and marine farming as organisms that can interfere with the production of algae or shellfish.

Taxonomically, the genus belongs to the class Scaphopoda, within the family Dentaliidae. These organisms are sedentary benthic dwellers that typically bury themselves in soft sediments, leaving only the posterior end exposed to exchange water for respiration and feeding.

The damage caused by Dentalium in aquatic environments is primarily related to space competition and mechanical disturbance of substrate surfaces. In high-density aquaculture setups, their presence can affect the growth conditions of target species, potentially causing tissue abrasion or interfering with the nutrient uptake of cultured organisms.

The biology of Dentalium is marked by a planktonic larval stage (trochophore) that eventually settles into the benthos to undergo metamorphosis. Once settled, they feed on microscopic prey like foraminifera and organic detritus. Their secretive lifestyle makes population control challenging once they are established in a specific area.

Protection and control measures focus on environmental management within marine farms. Growers typically utilize managed, sterile, or periodically replaced substrates to prevent the settlement of these mollusks. Maintaining water quality and minimizing excess organic sedimentation at the farm site are critical factors in reducing the density of these benthic organisms.
