Dentalium entalis is a marine mollusk belonging to the class Scaphopoda and the family Dentaliidae. While it is not a direct pest of terrestrial crops, its presence in coastal environments can interfere with agricultural infrastructure that relies on seawater, such as coastal hydroponic farms or aquaculture facilities, making it a nuisance species in specific industrial contexts.

Taxonomically, the organism is classified within the order Dentaliida. Its most recognizable feature is the calcified shell, which resembles a slightly curved tusk or tooth, open at both ends. This unique structure allows the mollusk to thrive in sandy or muddy substrates, maintaining its position while feeding and respiring within the sediment.

The biology of this mollusk involves a life cycle that begins as a free-swimming larva. These larvae are dispersed by marine currents before eventually settling into the substrate. Once settled, they develop their characteristic shells and use specialized tentacles called captacula to collect organic debris and microscopic organisms from the surrounding sediment.

Damage caused by this mollusk is primarily mechanical and related to water intake systems. If agricultural operations pull water directly from marine sources, the accumulation of living or dead shells can obstruct intake valves, filtration units, and piping. This reduces the flow rate and efficiency of water-dependent agricultural systems, necessitating frequent manual or chemical cleaning of the equipment.

Effective management strategies focus on prevention at the source. Installing high-efficiency multi-stage filtration systems at the water intake is the primary method of defense. Additionally, implementing regular maintenance schedules, such as flushing pipelines and using anti-fouling treatments on pump components, is essential to minimize the risk posed by the colonization of these mollusks in agricultural water networks.
