Description

Systematic position. The chervil moth (Depressaria chaerophylli) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Depressariidae. This insect is a specialized phytophage that primarily targets plants within the Apiaceae family, completing its entire life cycle on host plants.

Host crops. The moth predominantly attacks wild chervil (Anthriscus sylvestris), but it frequently infests commercially grown umbelliferous crops. These include carrots, parsley, parsnips, celery, and dill. It is particularly damaging to seed production fields where the larvae feed on the developing flower heads.

Biology and life cycle. The species undergoes complete metamorphosis. Adults overwinter in sheltered locations such as leaf litter or tree bark. In spring, females lay eggs on the host plants. Once hatched, the larvae feed voraciously, passing through several instars before pupating in the soil or within webbed clusters of leaves.

Nature of damage and economic impact. The larvae are the primary damaging stage. They spin webs to bind leaves and flower umbels together, creating protective nests. Within these structures, they skeletonize foliage and destroy developing seeds and buds. This results in significant yield reduction and loss of seed quality, often rendering the crop unmarketable.

Management and control. Effective control involves an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Cultural practices include removing wild Apiaceae weeds from field margins and practicing deep plowing after harvest to disrupt pupation. Chemical control should be implemented early, using targeted insecticides if monitoring shows larval populations exceeding economic threshold levels.
