Poultry red mite

The Poultry red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae) belongs to the order Parasitiformes and the family Dermanyssidae. While primarily recognized as a pest within the poultry sector, its impact on agricultural economics is profound. It is an obligate blood-feeding ectoparasite that creates significant challenges for farm management and animal welfare.

This mite infests various bird species, including domestic chickens, turkeys, and ornamental birds. In the agricultural environment, it resides within the bedding, nesting boxes, and cracks of poultry houses. It is not a crop pest, but its presence is directly linked to the hygiene standards of the farm and the quality of organic materials used in animal housing.

The life cycle of the mite is rapid, consisting of egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Under ideal conditions of warmth and humidity, the entire cycle can be completed in approximately seven days. Their nocturnal behavior, combined with the ability to survive for months without food, makes them an incredibly resilient pest that is difficult to eradicate once established.

The economic impact is manifested through reduced egg production, weight loss in broilers, and increased mortality rates. Furthermore, Dermanyssus gallinae is a proven vector for various avian pathogens, including Salmonella and various viruses, which can lead to widespread outbreaks within a farm if the mite population is not strictly controlled.

Effective control measures require a multi-faceted approach. To manage infestation, farmers should implement:

• Regular and thorough cleaning of poultry sheds and removal of contaminated litter.
• Application of approved acaricides in a targeted manner to kill mites in their hiding spots.
• Structural maintenance to seal cracks and crevices in walls and flooring.
• Use of diatomaceous earth or similar non-toxic desiccant dusts in nesting areas.
• Ongoing monitoring using traps to detect mite presence at early stages of infestation.
