House mouse mite

Liponyssoides sanguineus, commonly referred to as the house mouse mite, is a species of mite belonging to the family Dermanyssidae, order Mesostigmata. While not a direct pest of plant tissue, this arthropod is a significant concern for agricultural operations, particularly in storage facilities, granaries, and warehouses where rodent populations are present.

The primary hosts for these mites are house mice, although they readily feed on other small mammals, including rats, and can occasionally bite humans or livestock. Their presence in farm structures is often linked to poor sanitation or inadequate rodent control, which can indirectly affect the safety and hygiene standards of agricultural products stored on-site.

The biological cycle of this mite involves several stages: egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult. They are nest-dwelling parasites that thrive in protected, dusty environments. The mite is highly dependent on the host for blood meals, and its population density is directly correlated with the abundance and nesting activity of rodents within the structure.

The damage caused by Liponyssoides sanguineus is primarily medical and veterinary. It is a known vector for Rickettsialpox, a disease caused by Rickettsia akari. In an agricultural setting, the presence of these mites requires immediate attention, as their bite causes intense irritation and secondary skin infections in workers, disrupting normal operational procedures and requiring expensive remediation.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for controlling this mite. The priority must be given to total rodent eradication within the premises, as the removal of hosts will inevitably lead to the collapse of the mite population. Following deratization, deep cleaning of storage areas and the application of residual acaricides on floor cracks, crevices, and rodent nesting sites are necessary to ensure complete elimination.
