Vetch flea beetle

The Vetch flea beetle (Derocrepis rufipes) is a small beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. It is a specialized pest known for its high jumping ability, which is characteristic of the flea beetle subfamily. This insect is widely recognized as a significant threat to various legume crops in agricultural landscapes.

The primary host plants for this pest include vetches (Vicia spp.), peas, lentils, and other leguminous plants. Both adults and larvae can cause damage, but it is the adult stage that is most frequently observed feeding on the aerial parts of young plants during the seedling emergence phase, which is the most critical period for crop establishment.

The life cycle of the Vetch flea beetle consists of complete metamorphosis. Adult beetles overwinter in the soil or under plant debris in fields and field margins. In early spring, when temperatures rise, they emerge to feed on sprouting legumes. Females lay eggs in the soil, and after hatching, the larvae go through several developmental stages, often feeding on root systems or foliage before pupating in the soil.

Damage symptoms are characterized by numerous small, rounded holes in the leaves, often referred to as shot-holing. When populations reach high densities, the leaves can become heavily perforated, leading to reduced photosynthetic capacity, stunted growth, and potential death of seedlings. This damage is particularly detrimental in fields with slow-growing crops.

Management of the Vetch flea beetle relies on an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Key strategies include:

• Crop rotation to break the pest's life cycle.
• Spatial isolation of new legume plantings from previous years' fields.
• Control of leguminous weeds that act as alternative hosts.
• Chemical control using systemic or contact insecticides when economic injury levels are exceeded.
