Description
The genus Deudorix belongs to the Lycaenidae family within the order Lepidoptera. Several species in this genus are notorious pests in orchards and agricultural fields worldwide, known primarily for their larvae's habit of boring into fruits and seeds of various economically important plants.
These pests primarily target a wide range of fruit-bearing crops, including pomegranates, citrus, lychees, macadamia nuts, and avocados. Their host range depends largely on the specific species of the moth and the geographical region in which they operate, making them a global challenge for fruit producers.
The life cycle begins with eggs deposited near the calyx or on the skin of the developing fruit. Once hatched, the larvae penetrate the fruit rind to feed on the pulp and seeds. Since they spend most of their larval stage inside the fruit, they are well-protected from environmental stressors and natural enemies.
The damage caused by Deudorix larvae is often devastating. By tunneling through the fruit, they create pathways for pathogens, which leads to fruit rot and premature fruit drop. This internal feeding makes detection difficult until significant damage has already occurred, severely impacting crop yield and quality.

Strategies include the use of pheromone traps to time insecticide applications accurately, as well as cultural practices such as bagging fruits and strictly removing and destroying infested fruit from the orchard floor to disrupt the pest's life cycle.
