Deudorix dariaves

Systematic position. Deudorix dariaves is a member of the family Lycaenidae, within the order Lepidoptera. This insect is classified as an internal fruit feeder, which poses significant challenges for commercial fruit production due to its cryptic behavior during the larval stage.

Affected crops. The pest primarily targets subtropical and tropical fruit species. It is commonly associated with damage to pomegranate fruits, various citrus varieties, and pistachio nuts, where larvae infiltrate the developing fruit to feed on the inner tissues and seeds.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically deposit eggs on the surface of young fruits or near the calyx. Upon hatching, the larva bores into the fruit, where it resides and feeds until reaching maturity, often completing its pupation process within the fruit or in the vicinity of the attachment point.

Damage and economic impact. The primary injury is caused by larvae consuming the internal parts of the fruit, leading to physiological disruption and promoting rot. The entry holes serve as entry points for pathogens and secondary infections. This damage leads to premature fruit drop, significant yield loss, and a drastic reduction in market quality for fresh produce.

Control measures. Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy to minimize damage. Essential practices include:

• Sanitation, including the collection and destruction of infested fallen fruit.
• Use of pheromone traps for monitoring and male-mating disruption.
• Application of biological insecticides, such as Bacillus thuringiensis, targeting early larval instars.
• Judicious use of chemical insecticides during the egg-laying period, while respecting pre-harvest intervals to ensure food safety.
