Deudorix dinochares

Deudorix dinochares is a species of butterfly belonging to the family Lycaenidae, commonly known as the apricot playboy or red-spotted playboy. Its larvae act as serious internal fruit borers, causing significant agricultural losses in sub-Saharan Africa.

Taxonomically, this insect belongs to the order Lepidoptera. While adult butterflies are often admired for their appearance, the larval stage is highly destructive, specifically adapted to feed on the interior of fleshy fruits and seeds of various woody and herbaceous plants.

The pest primarily targets fruit-bearing crops such as pomegranates, citrus, and various legumes. By boring into the developing fruit, the larvae create entry points that not only destroy the interior tissue but also invite secondary pathogens, leading to premature fruit drop.

The life cycle involves the female laying eggs on the fruit surface. Once the larvae hatch, they penetrate the skin to feed on the internal structures.
