Description
The pomegranate butterfly (Deudorix isocrates) is a destructive lepidopteran insect belonging to the Lycaenidae family. Commonly known in its native regions as the 'Anar butterfly', it is considered a serious pest for pomegranate cultivation in tropical and subtropical areas, particularly in South Asia.
This pest is highly polyphagous, although it strongly prefers pomegranates. It also attacks fruits of other plants, including citrus, guava, apple, tamarind, and wood apple. The larvae are notorious for their internal feeding habits, which make them difficult to control once they have entered the fruit tissue.
The life cycle begins when an adult female deposits eggs individually on the calyx or surface of young fruit. Upon hatching, the larva bores into the fruit, creating a tunnel and filling it with excreta (frass). The larval stage consists of five instars, after which pupation often occurs inside the damaged fruit or near the calyx.
The economic damage is severe as the presence of larvae leads to secondary bacterial and fungal infections. Attacked fruits exhibit rotting and premature dropping. In many cases, the internal destruction of seeds and arils renders the fruit completely unmarketable, leading to substantial yield losses for farmers.
Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. Farmers should focus on orchard sanitation, which includes the prompt collection and destruction of fallen or infested fruits to prevent the next generation. Additionally, bagging individual fruits with paper or plastic bags is highly effective for small-scale production. Chemical control is most successful if applied during the early stage of egg-laying, targeting the larvae before they penetrate the fruit skin.
