Diabrotica limitata is a species of beetle belonging to the family Chrysomelidae within the order Coleoptera. Recognized as a significant agricultural pest, this insect is closely related to other notorious corn rootworms, posing a persistent threat to crop production systems, particularly in Central and South American agricultural landscapes.

The primary host for Diabrotica limitata is maize (corn). However, the pest exhibits a broad host range, feeding on various legumes, other cereal crops, and some vegetable species. This polyphagous nature allows the pest to persist in agricultural environments by moving between different host plants as they become available throughout the growing season.

The life cycle begins with eggs deposited in the soil near the base of host plants. Larvae hatch and immediately target the root system, causing severe physiological stress to the plant. Because the roots are the vital organs for water and nutrient uptake, damaged plants often show stunted growth, yellowing, and an increased risk of lodging during adverse weather conditions.

Adult beetles (imago) contribute to the damage by feeding on foliage, tassels, and the silks of corn ears. By destroying the silks, they directly interfere with the pollination process, which can lead to poorly filled ears and significant yield losses. Furthermore, the physical damage inflicted by the beetles creates entry points for fungal diseases, compounding the economic impact.
