Green corn rootworm

The Green corn rootworm (Diabrotica porracea) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. This beetle is recognized as a significant agricultural pest, particularly in regions where maize cultivation is prevalent. Its distinct green appearance helps the adult beetle blend into the foliage of host plants, often allowing populations to go unnoticed until significant damage has occurred.

The primary host for this pest is maize (corn), though it can also infest various other grass species. The damage is caused by both life stages: larvae feed exclusively on the root systems of young plants, while adults consume leaf tissue, pollen, silks, and developing kernels. This dual-action feeding behavior makes the insect a severe threat to crop health and final yield.

The biological cycle of this pest is univoltine, meaning one generation per year. Eggs are laid in the soil near the root zone of host plants, where they undergo diapause and survive the winter. Upon hatching, the larvae move to the roots to feed. After pupation in the soil, the adults emerge to feed on above-ground parts, mate, and deposit the next generation of eggs back into the soil.

The economic impact of Diabrotica porracea is significant. Larval root feeding damages the plant's ability to anchor itself, resulting in severe lodging (falling over), especially during windy conditions. Furthermore, adult feeding on silk prevents proper pollination, which directly causes "gappy" or poorly filled ears, significantly reducing the quality and quantity of the harvest.

Effective management requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. The most critical component is crop rotation, which breaks the lifecycle by removing the specific food source required by the larvae. Chemical controls include the use of seed treatments for early-season protection and foliar applications of insecticides during peak adult activity to manage populations and prevent further yield losses.
