Description

Systematic position. Diabrotica speciosa belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. This beetle is a significant pest primarily distributed in South and Central America, where it causes substantial economic damage to various commercial crops due to its high adaptability and reproductive potential.

Affected crops. The pest is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide range of plants. Corn is its primary host, but it also causes severe damage to soybeans, beans, potatoes, wheat, sunflowers, and numerous vegetable crops, making it a critical threat to diverse agricultural landscapes.

Biology and life cycle. The species undergoes a complete metamorphosis. Adult females lay eggs in the soil near the base of host plants. The larvae hatch and immediately begin feeding on root systems. After completing their larval development, they pupate within the soil before emerging as adults to feed on aerial parts of the plant and mate.

Damage characteristics. Adult beetles feed on leaves, flowers, and pollen, causing defoliation and reproductive damage. However, the larvae are considered the most destructive stage as they prune root systems. This damage impairs the plant's ability to take up water and nutrients, resulting in stunted growth, lodging of stems, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections.

Control measures. Effective management of this pest requires an integrated approach:

  • Crop rotation to break the beetle's life cycle.
  • Use of seed treatments with systemic insecticides.
  • Application of soil-applied insecticides at planting.
  • Foliar insecticide applications during peak adult emergence.
