The Southern corn rootworm (Diabrotica undecimpunctata) belongs to the family Chrysomelidae, order Coleoptera. It is a highly destructive agricultural pest primarily known for its impact on maize production. Despite its name, it is a versatile pest that can thrive in various agricultural environments across its range.

This beetle species displays a broad host range, attacking not only corn but also many other crops such as legumes, cucurbits, and various vegetables. Larvae are particularly damaging to the root systems of host plants, while the adults feed on foliage, pollen, and the silks of corn ears, significantly impacting plant health and yield potential.

The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically deposit eggs in the soil near the base of suitable host plants. Once hatched, the larvae feed on roots, often causing the plants to become stunted or lodge. The development time and number of generations per year are highly dependent on regional climate conditions and soil temperature.

Damage caused by this insect is twofold. Larval feeding restricts the plant's ability to take up water and nutrients from the soil, leading to weakened root structures. Adult beetles inflict damage by consuming leaves and silks, which impairs pollination and ear development. In heavy infestations, the economic threshold is quickly exceeded, necessitating intervention.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Crop rotation remains one of the most successful methods for disrupting the insect's life cycle. Additional control measures include the use of seed treatments with systemic insecticides, the application of granular soil insecticides at planting, and the use of pheromone or sticky traps to monitor adult populations and determine optimal timing for rescue treatments.
