Description
Diadegma is a genus of wasps belonging to the family Ichneumonidae (order Hymenoptera). In agricultural science, this insect is recognized not as a pest, but as a vital biological control agent that naturally suppresses populations of harmful lepidopteran larvae in various crops.
The most significant species, Diadegma semiclausum, is widely known for its ability to parasitize the diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella). This pest causes severe damage to cruciferous vegetables, such as cabbage, kale, broccoli, and canola, making Diadegma an essential ally for farmers worldwide.
The biology of the species involves the female wasp searching for host larvae on plants. Once found, she injects an egg into the host. The wasp larva develops inside the caterpillar, consuming its internal tissues until the pest dies, which prevents the host from maturing and causing further damage to the crops.
Diadegma is highly valued in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) due to its high searching efficiency, even when pest populations are low.
