The Echium leaf miner (Dialectica scalariella) is a moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Gracillariidae. This insect is primarily known for its biological relationship with plants of the Boraginaceae family, specifically the genus Echium, where it acts as a leaf-mining specialist.
The main host plants include various species of Echium. The larvae feed exclusively within the leaf tissue, creating irregular, blotch-like mines. This specialized feeding habit allows the larvae to consume the parenchyma layer, which is crucial for the plant's metabolic processes and photosynthesis.
