Diarthrothrips

Diarthrothrips is a genus of insects belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. The most economically significant species is Diarthrothrips coffeae, widely known as a destructive pest specifically targeting coffee plants (Coffea spp.) in African regions. These insects are microscopic but can cause massive losses if left uncontrolled.

The habitat of this pest is primarily restricted to coffee foliage. Adults and larvae congregate on the undersides of leaves, sheltering from direct sunlight and environmental stressors. Their presence is highly correlated with specific microclimatic conditions, preferring warm and relatively dry weather, which triggers population explosions.

The life cycle of the insect consists of eggs, two larval stages, prepupa, pupa, and adults. In ideal conditions, the entire life cycle is completed rapidly, allowing for multiple overlapping generations throughout the growing season. This rapid reproduction makes the pest particularly resilient and difficult to eradicate once an outbreak has occurred.

The damage caused by Diarthrothrips is characterized by silvering or browning of the leaves due to the destruction of mesophyll cells. As the insect pierces the leaf tissue to feed on sap, it injects toxins that disrupt normal plant physiology. The result is defoliation, stunted growth, and a significant reduction in the photosynthesis capacity of the coffee bush.
